Bio-systems and Bioprocess Engineering

Department of Biotechnology has constituted a new Task Force on Biosystems and Bioprocess Engineering with an aim to find innovative and efficient solutions for the development and improvement of sustainable bioprocesses of commercial interest, taking into account the environmental requirements and constraints involved in large scale production processes.

The program would support interdisciplinary approaches towards analysis and synthesis of complex cellular systems based on the hierarchical structure and decomposability of biosystems. It would also aim to integrate recombinant technology and process design, as well as in silico modelling and process systems engineering for efficient bioprocesses development.

Areas of interest are the following however not limited to:
  • Manipulation of biosystems through metabolic engineering techniques to provide novel enzymes, pathways and cells
  • Modelling the performance of biological systems such as up-stream processing, bioreactor operation and downstream processing
  • Model-based design of bioprocesses, leading to new sustainable production processes
  • Optimization of bioprocess/ bioprocess plant with advanced design, analysis and optimization tools.
  • Molecular and multi-scale Biosystems Engineering approach in developing several new bioprocesses for bioproducts of commercial importance
  • Development of combined bioconversion and separation processes
  • Developing integrated bioproduction systems for chemicals, fuels and pharmaceuticals from renewable materials
  • Developing and integrating methods and tools ranging from Systems and Synthetic Biology to combined bioconversion and product recovery in pilot plant under industry-relevant conditions.
  • Design of synthetic enzymes/cells for improved production of bio-products
  • Process analytical techniques for bioprocesses
