DBT JRF program was initiated in 2004 to provide fellowships for biotech students pursuing research in universities and / or research institutions in the country. Students are selected through online Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) conducted by NCCS, Pune. 250 fellowships can be awarded every year. From year 2013, the programme is being coordinated by National Centre for Cell Science, Pune.

DBT Research Associateship programme was initiated in 2001 to train post-doctoral students in frontier areas of research in Biotechnology and life sciences at premier institutions in India and is being implemented by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The fellowship is initially awarded for a period of two years and can be extended based on review of progress. There is a provision for 100 fellowships per year. The fellows find placement in leading academic and research institutions in the country. DBT-RA programme is very popular among the researchers as is evident from increase in number of applicants in last five years.
