The India International Science Festival (IISF) was a unique opportunity for the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to engage in several activities on a single platform to explore new ideas and knowledge, ways of innovation and to translate academic research into industrial applications.
DBT participated in IISF 2016 expo with all scientific Departments/Ministries to showcase the programs, achievements along with other renowned Scientific and Industrial Organizations of the Country.
The multifarious activities in the five day event helped DBT reach out to youth and common man especially school children and benefit them. DBT also showcased the activities & achievements of their autonomous institutions like Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) & Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB) in stalls set up by them.
“This is a fantastic move that can create awareness among young people about science and technology. People have shown interest to know about the efforts done by the government and DBT said Dr. R. Radhakrishanan, Scientist, RCGB, Trivendrum.
“People have shown interest in the services of the institution and its work. School students are mostly interested to know whether they can opt for biotechnology as their career. Farmers could also check about the authentic seeds, and other related information,” DS Negi, technical officer CDFD pointed out.
Tomato buns, guar biscuits, guar muffins, and other value added product have been displayed were displayed by CIAB Mohali.
The major events for students were the Science Village where the students are invited from the villages of rural India, Mega Student Lab and DST inspire projects. Besides, young scientists meet was also organized in which scientists presented their work. Science documentaries, films and laser show were some of the additional attractions of IISF 2016.
The prime objective was to disseminate scientific knowledge among the masses in a form that would not only underline the importance of science but also celebrate it. Young Scientists Conference; Mega Science, Techno and Industry Expo; International Science Film Festival; Science Experiments Demo were some of the key attractions of this celebration of science.
The festival was organised by National Physical Laboratory (NPL), New Delhi with a vision to develop the ethos of innovation among the people with an aim to provide a platform to young Indian Scientists across the globe to exchange knowledge and ideas for widening the spectrum of scientific temper both in India and abroad. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), DBT and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) are partners in the event.
